Today, Femke was visiting a friend in The Hague. I joined her to pick up my new suit and to buy a few shirts and a belt to go with it. The shopping done, I had a relaxing lunch at the very nice Café Dudok. In a stylish and a bit old-fashioned environment I enjoyed a fresh sandwich together with a lovely glass of Westmalle Dubbel (a Belgian Trappist monastery beer) while reading an international newspaper and doing some people watching.
These are exactly the kind of things I miss in the Middle East. Not that you can’t do it there, but the atmosphere, the people (not to mention the beer) are so different.
After a while, Femke and her friend Pamela joined me, and together we walked to the City Hall. Here, it was the last day to see the yearly World Press Photo exhibition (winner photo above is taken in Beirut by Spencer Platt). I always try to see it, wherever I have the chance, despite that many of the photos are rather depressing (if excellent), depicting war and catastrophes. And the many photos from the Middle East didn’t exactly make me long to go back to that crazy place.
