This was my mother's last day in Jerusalem. We celebrated it by going to the ancient city of Jericho, in the Jordan valley. Here, it was nice and warm, a welcome improvement to the cold and wet Jerusalem weather.
Our first goal was the Hisham’s Palace, an Umayyad hunting palace built in the 8th Century. Sadly, an earthquake ruined it just a few years after completion, but it is still a beautiful place with some extraordinary mosaics.
A long walk to the west took us to a cable car and a lofty ride up to a Greek monastery hanging on the cliffs. There is also a restaurant nearby, and there we had an Arabic lunch with a stunning view over the Jordan valley.
