Flash floods at the Dead Sea

Planning a nice day out, we went to the Dead Sea for a float, then to the Ein Gedi Natural Reserve. It is so beautiful there, with the creek, the waterfalls and the cooling pools under the falls. Lovely!
We brought a picnic with us, inagurating our new cooling box. We’re going native :-)

On the way out from Ein Gedi, we saw lots of ibex (a kind of desert antilope) and very cute hyraxes (looks like a huge guinea pig).

Driving home towards Jerusalem, we had not come far, when the police blocked the road. This time it was not a checkpoint. Instead, the road was blocked by water and stones further on, flushed out by massive flash floods. It did rain a bit when we floated in the Dead Sea, and obviosly it had rained more higher up in the mountains. We could se spontaneous water falls higher up on the cliffs, a very rare sight in this desert region.
Flash floods can be extremely dangerous in desert regions like this, coming from nowhere and with great force, surprising hikers in the nature. This is just what happened, sadly killing four climbers.
We were more fortunate, and only had to drive a three hour detour south and around the mountains, coming home really late.
