Elvis, Crusaders and views

Tired after a long week, we chose to have a slow Saturday. First, we went to the odd but charming Elvis diner in Abu Gosh, outside Jerusalem. The owner is a dedicated Elvis fan, and it certainly shows at this traditional American diner. Every wall plus the ceiling is decorated with Elvis-related objects. Outside stands two huge Elvis statues. And the menu is of course inspired by Memphis. We opted for two lovely home-made milkshakes, but will definitely return for a brunch another weekend.

From here, we drove to a spring where crusaders built a fortified farmhouse a long time ago. The house is till there, otherwise it was mostly a picnic area for Israeli and Israeli-Palestinian families, including an utterly bored camel in a corner.

On the way back, we chose the old road to Jerusalem, meandering through the mountains. The views are spectacular here and the landscape beautiful and so much greener compared to the east side of Jerusalem. Almost in Jerusalem, we stopped in the cute little village of Ein Kerem. The Christian thinks that John the Baptist was born here, so there are several churches and monasteries, with the pilgrims that goes with it, but also a bunch of restaurants and cafés.
